The Soviet Land Submarine: A Failed Plan To Burrow Underground Nuclear Attack

 The Soviet Union and the United States were constantly looking for new, innovative, and even bizarre ideas to dominate the battle field. The soviet Union designed and tested one of these machines in 1964, named the Land Submarine. This is an underground, nuclear powered, machine that is designed to sabotage enemies underground.


The machine had two floors which could accommodate up to 15 soldiers. At the front was a powerful drill. The drill was designed to heat and melt rocks such as granite and basalt. Liquid metal would then be used to help cut the rocks. This was done at an incredible 1,000 degrees celcius.


This machine was designed not only to cut and melt rocks, but create a tunnel support. The cut gravel would be used to create a solid foundation for the machine to move forward at 10 km per hour. This technology could be used to help transport and bury nuclear bombs secretly inside enemy territory.


The second test however proved the machine to not be sustainable. A nuclear explosion caused the machine and soldiers within to be buried underground. After the explosion, the project was immediately terminated. While a failure, it remains a bizarre but fascinating example of the extreme measures nations were willing to explore during the Cold War.
